William the Conqueror (c1028 – 1087) launched the Norman conquest of England in 1066, defeating King Harold at the Battle of Hastings He descends from the Vikings. Built many castles including the Tower of London. In 1086 he ordered the first survey of land holdings; the Domesday book.

Around the base are battleships, horses as depicted in the Bayeux tapestry, Dover Castle and a Norman shield and the quote round the base reads … ‘I attacked the English of the Northern shires like a lion’
