Queen Victoria (1819-1901) was the queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 and Empress of India from 1876. Her reign was a period of great progress and change within the United Kingdom. In 1840 Queen Victoria married her first cousin Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg. They had nine children. Albert died in 1861 after which she plunged into very deep mourning and avoided public appearances. Her reign of 63 years and seven months was longer than any of her predecessors and is known as the Victorian era
